LIFE TFA participates in the first meeting of the working group on the carbon credit methodology for timber construction in Galicia.
Santiago de Compostela hosted a working meeting on 17 June focused on the “Methodology for certifying carbon storage in wood products for construction in Galicia”, one of the development lines linked to the Xunta de Galicia’s Voluntary Carbon Credit System.
The event, organised by the Xunta de Galicia through the Subdirectorate-General for Meteorology and Climate Change, under the Directorate-General for Renewable Energies and Climate Change of the Regional Ministry for the Environment and Climate Change, brought together public and private entities with specialised technical knowledge in timber construction, certification, sustainability and the forestry-timber value chain.
Representing the LIFE TFA project were Xilonor, 3edata and the Wood and Design Cluster of Galicia, all project partners. Representatives from Fundación Arume, CIS Galicia and the Xunta de Galicia also attended.
The meeting marked the first session of the working group on the carbon credit methodology for timber construction within the Xunta de Galicia’s Voluntary Carbon Credit System. This group has an advisory role and aims to provide specialised technical knowledge and support to the Technical Committee in the process of analysing the methodologies.
During the session, the current status and roadmap of the Voluntary Carbon Credit System were presented, together with its associated methodologies. In addition, the participating entities analysed and discussed the different comments received on the methodology proposed by the Xunta de Galicia for certifying carbon storage in wood products for construction.
The definition and finalisation of this methodology represents a significant step forward for the timber sector in Galicia, as it will make it possible to establish common technical criteria to quantify, verify and register the carbon stored in wood products used in building construction. This tool will help strengthen the role of wood as a strategic material in the decarbonisation of the construction sector and in the promotion of more sustainable building models.
For the LIFE TFA project, participation in this working group represents an important step in the development of one of its expected results: contributing to the creation of a robust, verifiable methodology adapted to the Galician context to recognise carbon storage in wood products intended for construction.
The meeting made it possible to move forward with the technical review of the methodological proposal and the integration of contributions from key sector stakeholders, fostering a shared approach among the administration, technology entities, companies and representatives of the forestry-timber value chain.
